Animals abound in Senegal. Not so much the dog and cat varieties, but more animals being raised for food or work. As few people own transport or large properties, animals can often be seen in the road, either being pushed along by their owner, or just wandering on their own accord. The result is that drivers and cyclists need to keep a trained eye out to make sure they do not run over someone, and pedestrians need to make sure they do not step in something.

Winged creatures also abound in St Louis. These seagulls hovered over a beach in search of fishy remains.

I’ve never seen so many bats as I have in Senegal. In Dakar, just before sunset, bats can be seen flying amongst the trees in the neighborhood, eventually moving on in search of bugs. St Louis had even more bats. This group hung exposed under a branch.

This young cat was a regular at mealtimes. She would quietly appear at our feet and wait until food arrived. Then her demeanor changed quite abruptly, and she meowed incessantly as we ate. We quickly learned not to hold food in the air in front of her, as she would swipe at your hand, her claws fully extended.
